How to Winterize Your Backyard

How to Winterize Your Backyard

The cold weather has arrived but it’s not too late to make some last-minute preparations for the winter. Here at Bomanite, we’ve compiled a few tips to make sure your yard weathers the winter well and is in great shape come spring.

Prune your plants

Cut back your garden plants. For perennials, cut off the dead plants down near the root and, for annuals, pull them out completely. The former will bloom back nicely in the spring and enhance your landscaping.

If you have trees or other plants brushing against your house, it may be a good idea to prune them. Wet plant matter can degrade the siding or the stone over time, so creating some space over the winter may help you avoid repairs or unsightly splotches in the long term.

Seal the cracks

Water freezes when it expands so if water is seeping into your patio stone or driveway, it can damage it when it freezes. It’s a good idea to seal these openings before it gets too cold, since you’ll get a better-quality seal. If the temperature has already dropped, even a poor quality seal is better than leaving it open.

Put away your patio set

Regardless of whether your patio furniture is steel, wood, wicker, or fabric, the cold and moisture can drastically shorten its lifespan if left unprotected. Taking it inside a garage or shed is ideal, but failing that, tying down a tarp over it or shrink wrapping it is the next best thing.

High quality materials and craftsmanship are key to ensuring your landscaping, pools, and paving stand up to the seasons. Contact Bomanite today to find out how we can help.
